For those who are new to the waste disposal industry, it can be quite overwhelming and perplexing at times. Despite the fact that these concepts may appear similar at first glance, there are instances where they do overlap, but in many ways, they possess unique characteristics of their own.
Indeed, all of them serve the purpose of accommodating unwanted items and debris.
They are designed to be portable and effortlessly moved between different settings such as homes, businesses, or industrial spaces.
Moreover, they share the common feature of being compatible with most driveways for convenient placement. However, it is worth noting that certain hooklift bins have the potential to cause damage to the surface of your driveway or front lawn.
A basic and brief comparison or description of each individual waste disposal vessel is outlined below: -
Mini Skips What Are They?
Mini Skips was a marketing ploy back in the late 70's or early 80's, when mini skips first became popular. Mini Skips was the name of the company which was located in Ringwood Victoria. As a young guy at the time, I recall seeing all of their white mini skips & bins (looking from Canterbury Rd in Heathmont) lined up on a large block of land where the eastern freeway is now located. They had hundreds of mini skips which I assume were 2 & 3 cubic meters in volume. So to answer the question of what is a mini skip, it is a small skip bin, or a small vessel for holding as well as for the disposal of junk, rubbish and general waste!
Mini Skips Hire Sizes
There isn't many sizes of mini skips to select from, due to the name "mini" meaning small, mini skips sizes are normally considered to be 2, 3, & 4 cubic meters in volume.
Due to the carrying capacity of mini skips being small, they are ideally used in tight situations, where room is limited for the placement of the mini skip.
What are Mini Skips Used For?
Mini Skips are an ideal way for people to dispose of the waste generated by the smaller jobs around your property or house.
Commercially mini skips are used for decluttering of office space, or a quick clean up of a small factory, green garden waste from their factory or office lawn and garden.
Mini Skips are also commonly used by landscapers, concreters, brick layers etc, for the disposal of their excess, discarded or damaged bricks, rubble, concrete, pavers, rocks, dirt, clay, stones, gravel etc.
Due to the carrying capacity of our skip bin delivery truck, we can only legally transport 2 & 3 cubic meter skip bins with these heavy materials.
Skip Bins What are They?
In a nutshell, a skip bin is a larger mini skip!
A skip bin is a vessel used for holding general waste, materials and junk, which is disposed of at a local tipping facility after being loaded.
Skip bins are able to be relocated to many different environments, such as domestic homes, commercial and industrial businesses, schools, kindergartens, mobile workspaces etc.
Skip Bins are an efficient way of disposing of most types of waste.
Skip Bins Hire Sizes
A rough guide or rule of thumb for skip bin hire sizes which are most commonly used for domestic needs is 2 cubic meters to 8 cubic meters.
While commercial and industrial skip bin hire sizes are much larger, these larger skip bins are commonly used for steel recyclers which as a rough estimate, by what I have seen loaded of steel heading for the Sims yard in Melbourne, is around 10 to 14 cubic meters in size.
What are Mini Skips Used For?
Skip Bins are used more often when being compared to mini skips, this is due to the carrying capacity of skip bins being greater than that of the smaller mini skips.
Skip Bins are in between a mini skip and a hook lift bin, so they are very good for the small to large jobs for domestic and commercial use.
Skip Bins are the most common waste disposal vessel used within the domestic rubbish removal and disposal industry in Melbourne, especially within the eastern & outer eastern suburbs.
This is due to skip bins being small enough to fit onto domestic properties where space is limited, but they are still large enough to fit a good amount of waste, from kitchen, verandah, pergola, fence etc. demolitions, to decluttering your house, shop, office, factory etc.
Trailer Skips, What are They?
Trailer Skips are virtually a mini skip fitted to a tandem trailer. They cannot dispose of their waste at a transfer station, instead they have to have a front loader truck to pick up the whole unit to tip the contents into the truck. This is a more expensive way to dispose of junk and rubbish, which will reflect on their price to hire a skip. They are also limited by the weight of the contents being loaded into the mobile skip. You cannot load any dirt, bricks, concrete, gravel, sand etc, into the skips.
They are good if you don't want to pay for a permit to put your skip bin on the road, as you will need a council permit for a skip bin. Whereas, with a skip trailer, no permit is required due to the trailer being road registered.
Trailer skips are only good for light loads of junk and rubbish, another issue is that the opening for the skip is very high, which make it hard for elderly or short statured people to load the skip, unless you have a step ladder!
Sizes of Trailer Skips
As far as I am aware, they are only available in 3 or 4 cubic meters of volume, so people are limited for their use of these skips. I couldn't imagine lifting a couch into a trailer skip, their footprint is quite small, while they are fairly high making them harder to load when being compared to a mini skip or skip bin.
What are Trailer Skips Used For?
Trailer skips are only good for very light items or materials. No building waste is allowed or permitted, due to the waste being heavy for the disposal requirements.
Hook Lift Bins, What are They?
Hook Lift Bins are exactly what they state, they need a truck to be fitted with a special hook, which is used to lift the front of the bin up, while the truck slowly reverses under the bin, which is finally pulled onto the back of the truck.
The rear of the bins are fitted with a roller on each back corner, these rollers stop or limit the bins damage to the surface it is sliding over. Older bin at times the rear rollers cease up and don't turn, which means the surface the bin is sliding over will be damaged.
Sizes of Hook Lift Bins?
There is a huge range of different size hook lift bins, the common sizes are from 6 cubic meters up to 38 cubic meters, they may even go bigger!
They are not good for confined spaces, as they are quite wide, although the sides of these bins are low for their size.
What are Hook Lift Bins Used For?
Most commonly used for commercial use, generally these bins are too big for domestic use and need to be placed on the road, which requires a council permit, which can be expensive!
They are used mainly for demolition projects of houses, factories, buildings etc.
Before you make your decision of which waste disposal service you need to use, make sure you know what you are going to dispose of and select the most appropriate service to suit your needs and requirements.
